From Job Seeker to Innovator

01. The Job Hunt of a Middle-Aged Tech Guy

In May 2022, everything went wrong. My office shut down because of COVID, and suddenly, I was out of a job. Money was already tight, and I had my family to think about. We didn't have much saved up, so I had to find work fast.

Every Monday, I sent out 20 resumes, hoping one would stick. The first week, I heard nothing back. "Okay," I thought, "it's just the start. No big deal." But inside, I was starting to worry. I had to keep a brave face for my family, though.

Week after week, I got no replies, and that worry turned into a heavy feeling that wouldn't go away. Each day that passed without a call or an email made it heavier.

02. Result: 12 Weeks, 150 Application, 4 Interviews

By the second week with zero replies, I felt a nagging in my gut—this wasn't normal. So, I rolled up my sleeves and dug into my resume. I stuffed it with every project I'd ever worked on, thinking it would show off my experience. Surely, someone would bite now, right?

Week 3, and I'm 60 resumes deep, but only 1 interview comes through—a temp agency, not even a real tech gig. That's when it hit me—maybe it's not just about experience, maybe it's the way my resume looks. So, I coughed up some cash for one of those online resume builders to jazz it up. It looked slick, professional. This had to work.

6 weeks in, another interview pops up. But the pay? Way less than what I made before. It was time to call in the pros. I hired a resume writer who chopped my long list of projects down to a neat, one-page wonder. "This is it," I thought. "The perfect resume."

3 months and over 150 resumes later, I'm staring at just four interviews, none right for me, and no job offers. The so-called perfect resume wasn't cutting it.

03. I sold my favourite watch

Money was tight, and I secretly sold my best watches, pretending they were out for repair. I couldn't admit to my wife or myself how bad it was; I kept saying I needed a break, all while feeling overwhelmed inside.

I was really down, feeling the lowest ever. Lying there, looking up, I wondered why no one would hire me. With all my tech know-how and over 100 of completed projects, it just didn't make sense. I kept thinking, "Are my skills too old? Or did the resume guy get it wrong?"

I wandered to the harbor one night, drink in hand, feeling the weight of my troubles. The city lights danced on the water, but my mood stayed dark. I posted a sad note on Instagram and sat there, the night air mixing with the bitter taste of the drink, feeling utterly lost.

04. A simple but game-changing message

The next day, things started to look up. Stephen, an old buddy from high school, dropped me a message. He'd seen my post on Instagram and reached out. The guy was a HR manager now, and after hearing about my rut, he offered a piece of advice that would change everything.

"Don't send your single 'perfect' resume to every company," he texted.

"Why not? It's professionally written and shows all my skills," I replied, a bit defensive.

"No! We don't have time to read every line. We just want to know if you're a fit for the job," he explained.

I was puzzled. "Then, what should I do?"

"Simple. Take the key points from the job description and make sure they're on your resume."

It sounded too good to be true, but I was desperate. I followed his advice, tailoring my resume to match each job's requirements. And would you believe it? In just half a month, my phone started buzzing—an interview here, another there. Eight interviews out of 18 applications!

Finally, after a grueling six months, I landed a job. It was surreal. Stephen's simple tweak to my job-hunting strategy had cut through the noise and got me back on track. It was a game-changer.

05. Maybe...It is my calling

The journey didn't end there. Five months down the line, the world was introduced to ChatGPT, and it got me thinking. I wanted to share the lessons from my tough job-hunting experience and the skills I had honed in finding employment. I felt a calling, almost as if fate had handed me the expertise in software development and guided me through this ordeal for a reason.

I gathered a tech team with a clear mission: to create a resume platform that not only builds resumes but also navigates the job market and aligns candidates' skills with employer demands.

We invited users from around the world to test our platform, carefully monitoring their resume submissions and tracking success rates to gauge the real impact on their job searches.

The first try didn't hit the mark. Our AI got carried away, adding made-up details to resumes, and it missed the human touch. Still, in tech, setbacks pave the way to success. We were set on making it better and shaking up the job application process.

06. Good is not good enough

Seeing where our AI fell short, I knew we needed real human insight. So, I reached out to HR pros to add their expertise to our tech. My friend Stephen, the one whose advice had helped me before, jumped right in to help.

With Stephen's expertise, we refined the AI, combining his HR insights with our tech. The improvement was clear: 50% our testers landed jobs, way better than before. Yet, we pushed for more—just "good" wasn't enough for us.

We kept at it, tirelessly tweaking our prompts and inputting top-performing resumes, especially ones that resulted in job offers, into the AI. We aimed for it to learn from the most effective examples. Version by version, we noted steady enhancements, and by prompt v54, we had a breakthrough: over 65% of our users were getting jobs.

The success rate wasn't just a number; it was proof of what AI and human smarts could do together. Stephen's HR savvy was our guide through the job market maze. Our team's drive, user input, and non-stop refinement had birthed a tool that was genuinely transforming job seekers' futures.
